Hi, I'm Barry Black. I have made a study of the natural approach to dog training for more than 10 years. This came about following my adoption of a one year old German Shepherd called Jack, who had previously broken his owner's wrist! Jack was joining three other dogs - one bitch and two dogs - so the last thing I wanted was a newcomer to upset the balance. My initial thought was to rehome him, so I set about finding a new owner for him. Jack barked and growled at the first choice while couple number two were obviously insufficiently experienced. My third option seemed ideal, only to call me two hours later with irate messages that Jack was "a canine Houdini". After only three hours Jack was back.... to stay! What an eye opener! What I found remarkable about introducing Jack into the family was that I learned far more from him and his peers than they seemed to need to learn from me. I watched my Rottweiler bitch gain his respect and the pack hierarchy settle down naturally in a way which I would have been unable to achieve by my old methods learnt over more than 15 years of dog training. I used the library to research the dog's natural ancestor -the wolf. By studying how the wolf behaves and reacts with its fellow pack members I was able to understand how the domesticated "wolf" reacts in similar circumstances. The same ideas -studying the wild animals in their natural surroundings- has led me to understand how a wide variety of creatures will behave. By combining nature's rules with more conventional training techniques I have been able to develop my own methods which I can teach you. I owe so much to Jack! My aim is
to create a 50/50 respectful partnership between dogs and their owners
and more mental stimulation for our dogs. My techniques have stood me in good stead through 9 years as a Ministry of Defence dog handler and trainer, and several years working with a national Search and Rescue organisation as handler, assessor, trainer and regional co-ordinator. I can now offer practical training to owners in the South East of England.
